Description

The thyroid gland, located in the anterior region of the neck, in front of the trachea, is one of the largest endocrine glands; its normal weight in adults is between 15 g and 20 g. It produces two hormones –thyroxine and triiodothyronine– which play a critical role in cell differentiation during development, and help maintain thermal and metabolic homeostasis in adults. Thyroid gland disorders mainly result from certain autoimmune processes that increase production of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) or cause gland destruction with a reduced synthesis of these hormones (hypothyroidism). On the other hand, this gland may be affected by neoplastic processes, both benign and malignant. Given the elevated frequency of thyroid disorders, it is of paramount importance to gain sufficient knowledge on these in order to make accurate diagnoses that allow for early and effective treatment. This is our goal.
